Welcome to La Jolla

La Jolla

La Jolla means “the jewel” in Spanish and there’s certainly no better name for one of San Diego’s most desirable coastal communities. Marked by miles of jagged coastline, wide sandy beaches, and pounding surf, it’s no wonder La Jolla real estate is among the most coveted in all of Southern California. Incorporated as part of San Diego in 1850, true development of the area didn’t begin until a few decades later. By the turn of the century, La Jolla was gaining a reputation both as a resort area and an artist colony. Ellen Browning Scripps, a wealthy newspaper heiress who gave her name to many buildings and landmarks around San Diego, famously settled in the area. Many other celebrities have lived in La Jolla over the years including Alicia Keys, Gregory Peck, Robin Wright Penn, and Theodor Geisel, who is better known as Dr. Seuss!

Living in La Jolla represents the pinnacle of modern coastal living. The charming enclave known as the Village of La Jolla sits atop La Jolla Cove. Residents and visitors alike enjoy strolling down the quiet sidewalks, dipping in and out of art galleries and shopping for luxurious gifts in one of the Village’s many boutiques. World-class dining abounds, with an emphasis on seafood and coastal-inspired menus. In the mood to dine with a view? Try George’s at the Cove, a wonderful multi-tiered restaurant with exceptional ocean views and a farm-to-table tasting menu. Craving an intimate dining experience? Himitsu is the place for sushi and authentic Japanese omakase. With a bar that only seats eight and a patio reserved for just twenty people, plan ahead to grab a reservation here. Other local favorites include Herringbone, whose menu includes fresh seafood and exquisite meats, and The Cottage, which is the place to go for a celebratory brunch.

Alongside its shopping and dining scene, La Jolla is known for its many natural wonders. The Cove is perfect for exploring with a sea kayak. You’ll get up close and personal with seals, sea lions, and other local wildlife as you take in the breathtaking sculpted rock formation. Love to swim and snorkel? People flock to the area on weekends to swim across the open water from La Jolla Cove to the picturesque La Jolla Shores Beach. The Cove is also known for its undersea sights, including Leopard Sharks and orange Garibaldi Fish. For surfers, La Jolla Shores is a popular choice. After you’re done for the day, you can relax on the sand or hold a beach bonfire with friends. Windansea Beach is another prime surfing spot, though it should only be attempted by expert surfers as the waves and current are strong here. Prefer to enjoy the water from above? You’ll love hiking at Torrey Pines State Reserve. The trails are challenging, but not too difficult for most hikers. You’ll be treated to sweeping views of the ocean and the rarest pine tree in North America, the Torrey Pine.

Looking to buy a home in La Jolla? Each neighborhood has something different to offer. If you dream of catching a few waves every morning, there are several communities that are just blocks to the beach. Want to unwind with breathtaking sunset views? Many homes on Mount Soledad offer commanding views of the ocean below. No matter what neighborhood you’re considering, you’ll find unique and thoughtfully designed homes around every corner. Though people have been living in La Jolla since the late 1800’s, most homes have been redesigned or reimagined over the years. You’ll find some of the most luxurious, high-end real estate in all of San Diego within the 92037 ZIP code. Let’s take a tour – give me a call to start your La Jolla home search today!
